MEMORIAL DAY: HOW ONE WOMAN'S LOYALTY AND DEDICATION INSPIRED A NEW LOCAL TRADITION
Our local military historian, Joe Todd, said that during World War II, his mother’s boyfriend, PVT Robert L. Sutherland, was killed in action in 1944 and buried in Bartlesville. He had been in the Army about eight months and was still only 19 years old. Joe’s mother, Mildred Todd, decorated his grave each year until her death a few years ago. Realizing there probably were other young service personnel who were killed in action, never married, and had no family left to decorate their graves, Joe gathered their names and decided he would decorate the graves of those buried in cemeteries across Washington County.
That seemed like a big chore for one person, so when DAR members heard about it, we offered to help by decorating the graves at Bartlesville’s Memorial Park Cemetery and at the Dewey Cemetery. In the Memorial Cemetery alone, there are over 40 graves that needed decorating. We also recruited the Bartlesville Chapter of SAR whose members made and decorated wooden crosses and placed one at each grave on Thursday, May 24. Our very own Sherrill Yates created flower and flag arrangements and marked the location of each grave on section maps provided by Memorial Park. The next day, ten DAR members (Marilyn Jones, Maria Clampitt, Deb Cook, LeAnne Christensen, Mary Johnson, Gloria Hollis, Phyllis King, Peggy Richardson, new member Dora Patzkowski, and Pat Desormeau); plus one guest, and 9 SAR members (including 4 HODARS – for those who don’t know, HODARS are “husbands of DAR”) went to Memorial Park Cemetery where Mary gave each one a list of names, a section map, and a bag containing the flag and flower arrangements to place at each grave. In addition, DAR members Betty Miller and her sister Susie Smith decorated 19 graves at the Dewey Cemetery. It was such a success, in part due to feeling a personal connection to a local hero, that at yesterday’s meeting, the board voted that Bartlesville Chapter will participate each Memorial weekend as “The Private Robert L. Sutherland Brigade.” We wanted to name it after Private Sutherland who was the inspiration for the project and a brigade is a group of people organized for a special activity. We also have prepared an article to submit to the American Spirit Magazine about the project and will let you know if it is published. ~ Pat Desormeau |
